Craniosynostosis

Cranosynostosis

Craniosynostosis occurs in 1 in 2100 children. It may affect isolated sutures as a primary abnormality, or multiple sutures as a part of a syndrome, or it may be due to a systemic disorder. Nonsyndromic craniosynostosis is the most common form, despite the fact that more than 150 genetic syndromes have been identified . Sagittal suture craniosynostosis is the most common form and accounts for 40 to 60% of all cases.4,5 The coronal suture is involved in 20 to 30% of the patients; unilateral coronal synostosis is twice as common as bilateral involvement. Metopic synostosis accounts for <10%, followed by lambdoid suture synostosis as the least common type.
