Epilepsy
Epilepsy
Seizures are defined as an alteration of behavior, movement, or sensation that results from an abnormal and excessive discharge from a group of neurons. Epilepsy is defined as two or more unprovoked seizures. Epidemiological studies indicate that the incidence of both seizures and epilepsy is higher in children than in adults. Although the majority of children with epilepsy spontaneously enter into remission, 20% of patients are estimated to have therapyresistant epilepsy. Epilepsy surgery provides an alternative treatment for select patients with medically refractory epilepsy.
